opera I was fist exposed to Opera back in early 2002 when I started using Opera 6.01. Back in those days the only other real alternative to IE was Netscape or Mozilla. Firefox didn’t come about until a few years later. I remember a February day in 2003 when a friend of mine asked if I had seen that new web browser that changed all the web pages text into Swedish Chef. Being a Muppet Show fan back in the day, I thought it would be interesting to try out. It turns out that the Opera “Bork” edition only modified the MSN web page, however the publicity helped to spread word about an alternative cross-platform web browser.

What is the deal with this drive-by SPAM?  Luckily DISQUS is catching the comments and asking me to approve them, otherwise there would be links to a lot for questionable sites all over my comments.  The funny thing is that the the post "The Bumper List of Windows 7 Secrets" is getting the most SPAM.  That’s not even on my front page anymore, so what’s the deal?  I’m working on a video that I will be posting here.  It’s all about Windows 7.  Ok, it just showcases a few cool little features.  The BETA is closed now, so if you didn’t sign up, you will have to wait for the offical release.  Stay tuned, there’s more to come!

I recently began testing movie playback under Windows 7 and have some interesting feedback. Different players yielded different results on this HP Mini 1000’s Atom processor.

I wathched my first DVD rip. I had Hancock so I used a third party program to make a smaller version that I could keep on my USB drive. I don’t remember what profile I chose but I ended up with a 740mb .MKV file. Windows media player and Media Center neither one knew what to do with it. I thought I had installed VLC player, but that was under Windows XP. I need to test that later. I tried to open the file in JetAudio Media Center, and it started right up!

I watched the movie looking for little issues with playback, and found only the slightest hicups. Now what I need to do is see if they are in the same place on VLC playerso I know if it the laptop or the file.

Now, to be fair, I had several apps running (BlogDesk, HappyFish, Opera 10, Ghost, Media Player, several desktop gadgets, etc.) I was using Ghost to extract a few files form my XP Image that is stored on an external USB Hard Drive (100GB, 7200RPM). I am back down to 1GB of ram for reasons I will talk about later, and I still had a great experiance.

More testing starts tomorrow!
